Tyler’s Senior Portrait Session – Marietta, Ohio Parkersburg, West Virginia Senior Portrait Photographer

Tyler’s senior portrait session was a fun downtown Marietta afternoon. Tyler is a 2017 graduate of Marietta High School. I’ve known Tyler and his family for several years at this point and honestly, photographing his senior portraits made me feel old! I mean not like super old, but Senior portraits are such a rite of passage that it is difficult to ignore the transition it commemorates. Senior Portraits mark the cusp of that giant leap or shift that is about to happen. You can’t ignore it, things are about to change.

Those of you that have known me for awhile know that one of my great pleasures in life; so far, has been having a hand in raising a fella I now refer to as “The Man Cub”. His senior year in high school was  a mixed bag for me emotionally for a lot of reasons, but the knowledge that he was about to leave the nest was a mixture of terrified, delighted, in-denial, convinced he wouldn’t last a day,  manic nostalgia. I planned my entire year around his graduation date, marking things off an imaginary  To Do list that could have belonged to a deranged housekeeper.

  • Last Christmas
  • Last Prom
  • Last time to have to deal with THAT teacher
  • Last time to order someone to change the sheets
  • Last time to pick up socks
  • Last birthday at home
  • Last family trip

I became MORE tolerant of having a house full of kids playing video games all weekend. I would tell his mom, “Yes, they are ALL here again, this is our last year with a house full of boys.”

I knew that some day I would miss the crusty socks on the floor, the weird smell coming from his room and his boy brain forgetfulness.  Several years later, what I miss more than anything is the way he smells when I get that rare hug, the way it feels warm and solid somewhere deep in my soul when I watched him eat a good meal, and the way house his sense of humor and buddies filling up all of the space with their computers and teenage laughter made the house feel full and alive. Portraits mark time. Portraits freeze time. Portraits remind you of how much time has passed.

Tyler got me feeling all kinds of nostalgic for the Man Cub. I met Tyler and his family when his little brother was just a few weeks old. A gal with the sweetest southern accent called to inquire about a newborn session and a long friendship was born. When his mom mentioned Senior Portraits last year, I could not believe that much time had passed.

If you know Tyler you know he is a football player for Marietta High School and he is a super easy guy to spend time around. He is funny and and has killer eyes. We had a great time visiting, catching up and shooting in downtown Marietta, using the city as our backdrop.

Now lets get to the good stuff –

PS —  Something else I learned by having a senior is how expensive senior year can be. You tend to get sand bagged pretty hard financially at the end of the year. This is one of the reasons I suggest scheduling senior portraits for the summer before your kiddos senior year. We have  a booking special going on right now that includes a complimentary family session and an 11×14 canvas gallery wrap if you contact us to schedule your session by June 15th. You can schedule your senior session and family session for anytime between now and September 15th to take advantage of this great session bundle.

Family Portraits Made Easy – Marietta, Ohio Parkersburg, WV Portrait Photographer

Three kiddos and two busy careers? Sometimes I try to sit and imagine what it must be like to juggle that full of a schedule. You wake up and have three to four people to feed plus yourself . Maybe start a load of laundry? Think about dinner, make the bed, pack a lunch, find missing socks then scoot everyone out the door in a timely fashion. I bet once you hit the door at the office things don’t get much better. And now you are working and still juggling family stuff! How do people even manage to think about scheduling portraits in the middle of a normal day?

Let’s say you managed to briefly consider the possibility of scheduling portraits. The barrage of questions that follow might go something like this:

What will I wear? What will they wear? OMG my husband. What will my husband wear? Screw this, no. No portraits. But I want portraits. I want mementos of how sweet and little they were. I need those curls in a photo. Wait a minute, the baby is kinda going through a jerk stage. What if the photographer doesn’t like jerk babies? What if she can’t get a good photo of him? What if he is just a blur because he never slows down? What if my husband ….let him try……not happening. Nope. Not doing it. Oh my God is that pee on the floor? Did I pay the cable bill? Wait, did I figure out what to wear? What if I hate the photos? What if my eye does that thing?

Holy crap y’all? How does anyone even ever manage to schedule a session? If you have never worked with us, or it’s been awhile, you may not know how we help you every step of the way. Making that first contact is the hard part, but honestly, we make that easy too.  We help pick out and coordinate clothes (heck we can even shop for you!) We don’t mind if your husband wears his ball cap, his favorite shirt or tells us corny jokes. We don’t mind if you message us 27 times because you are obsessed with the perfect shade of Morrocan blue. We also don’t mind if you just show up and say, “Do your thing photographer lady!”

We’ve got you. We will handle all the little details so you can relax and enjoy yourself. You will be cared for like a cherished friend.  You will love your portraits. That is a promise.  And yes, we love jerk babies. Because we know if you wait five minutes or impersonate an elephant, they will be back to adorable little pile of curls and chub in no time! And when you arrive at the studio and put yourself in our care we know that sometimes it wasn’t easy for you to get here! Thank you!

Now this family below – they made it look easy. Their baby was NOT going through a jerk phase – just a super cute one. Honestly, I think every single one of them is going through a cute stage. Mama opted for the luxurious treat of hair and make-up so she arrived before hubby and had time to relax while we created a look for her that she loved! We like to keep it light and natural for family portraits. The Mister arrived with the kiddos just as Mama was finishing in the make-up chair. Having had a few hours to herself to recharge she was refreshed and excited to see her crew arrive. In just a few minutes we were clicking away, giggling and capturing not just photos of the this sweet family but the spirit of the family too! We built in time to relax, enjoy and really have fun as a family. Great photos? That was just a bonus.

Chloe and Collin Parkersburg, WV 2017 Prom

Prom portraits are one of those time honored traditions that always gets me feeling a little nostalgic. Where would #tbt (throw back Thursday) be without old prom portraits? Slowly as we get older, our old prom portraits move from a sometimes entertaining blast from the past to a classic snippet of a life that only exists in portraits and foggy memories.

I love my mom and dad’s old prom portrait. Her in a tiara and braces, him in his sailor suit and crew cut. Both looking all of 14 and full of smiles! I feel forever thankful for the photographer that took that portrait and that someone purchased a printed a copy of it and it still survives today for me to enjoy. ***PSA – Don’t forget to print your digital photos friends! You want your kids to be able to look back and see your goofy hair styles and the high fashion of your teenage years right?***

But you didn’t come here for a lecture on printing out your cell phone pics did you? You came here to see the gorgeous Chloe and her handsome date, Collin, didn’t you? Chloe was beyond stunning in her royal blue Sherri Hill gown from Elizabeth Michaels. Her hair was done by Jennifer Drake at Lee’s Studio and her make-up was expertly applied by Lauren Elaine. Friends, this gal was gorgeous! Her date, Collin, looked pretty amazing in his Calvin Klein tux too!

Creeking Sessions Are Back – Marietta, Ohio Portrait Photography

Hot summer days in Marietta, Ohio and the surrounding areas of Parkersburg, West Virginia mean searching for that perfect place to cool off in the shade. Sometimes it can also mean finding that perfect place for portraits that encourages fun, natural expressions, exploration and tons of giggling! Creeking Sessions have become a summer tradition for many Roberts Family Photography Clients.

Summer Creeking Portrait Sessions were inspired by one of my favorite childhood memories. As the end of the school year approached I would start counting down the days until I left for Girl Scout Camp at Camp Wakatomika with my best friend, Lea. We joyfully participated in all kinds of fun stuff at camp, singing, campfires, midnight fairy walks and arts and crafts. One of my most treasured memories was what the counselors called creeking. Essentially we would hike down to the creek that ran through the bottom of the camp and hike (or tromp) through it. We would splash, laugh, look under rocks and enjoy a couple hours exploring and staying cool. I remember begging for more time in the creek!

It has been my experience that most kids cannot resist water. They also can’t help smiling when playing in water. This is the perfect storm for a memorable portrait session full of natural smiles and expressions. Most families that participate in our creeking sessions say their kids talk about portraits for days because they had so much fun!

Check out this fun session from last summer that featured a couple of my favorite pals and an appearance by my favorite mermaid! I cannot tell you how much fun we had looking under rocks, catching things with our nets and throwing rocks to create huge ker-plunks!

Are you looking for a way to get great portraits of your kids AND create some of the best memories of the summer? Creeking Sessions are normally $299 and include 90 minutes of smiles, laughter, splashes and portraits. If you book by June 14th – your Creeking Session will be $199! Your session can be customized to include family portraits, a beloved family pet or a gaggle of cousins! Contact us today to reserve your spot!

Welcome baby B!

Newborn baby portraits just make me smile. First time parents learning to be mommy and daddy warm my heart. Throw in a new momma I have know since birth and the sweetest little boy ever and I am a super happy photographer.

This sweet little guy slept through most of his session. We shot all these portraits at home making it so easy for the new parents. No worrying about forgetting anything or getting out the door on time! You have everything you need and you don’t have to go anywhere!

Congratulation Amy and Noah!

Are you thinking about booking a newborn session? Ideally we suggest scheduling the session before the baby is here – we put your due date on our calendar and then let us know when the baby arrives and we get a firm date on the books. Taking care of it beforehand means you are more likely not to get overwhelmed and miss an opportunity to document the first days of your baby’s life and their tiny little newborn features! I love baby toes! Are you ready to book? Just click here!

Now, on to the baby!

Lauren – Warren High School Class of 2016

My style of senior portraits tends to speak to the quiet ones, the artists, the book lovers, the ones with the eyes that look wise beyond their years. Meet Lauren.

I met Lauren several years ago at a friends senior portrait session. Her Mama remembered me and contacted me when she was looking for a wedding photographer for herself and a senior portrait photographer for her daughter Lauren. Needless to say it was a busy and exciting year this family!

Lauren’s hair and make-up was done at the studio by the amazing Tonya Winebrenner. Lauren and I dodged raindrops during her session, but you’d never be able to tell it looking at these soulful images. We went from the Wetlands at Williamstown to Harmar Village and back to the studio in downtown Marietta, Ohio when the weather turned stormy.

She is as sweet and smart as she is gorgeous!

Judah Class of 2016 Senior Portraits

For senior portraits I tend to attract the home-schoolers, the rockers, the poets, the artists and it appears, the blacksmiths. Enter Judah. If I had to describe him in one sentence, I couldn’t. I would just show them this photo:

Judah in his head

Judah and I have been orbiting around one another’s lives now for almost five years. For the record, I think he has been roughly this size and has had this much facial hair since the first time I encountered him. I am pretty certain that our portrait session was the first time we have hung out one on one. I have been missing out.

Judah is funny, intelligent, driven and really contradicts any stories you have heard about teens these days….for part of our session his sister-cousin-best friend and fellow badass, Lydia, tagged along, held the reflector and corroborated some of the more ridiculous stories that Judah told. Those two have an unmistakable bond – the kind that only comes with years of friendship, adventures and conversations. It would be hard to tell the story of Judah without mentioning Lydia.

Let’s get to the good stuff.

Country Girl Maternity {Marietta, Ohio Maternity Photography}

She is a country girl – from her curls to her bare feet. She is happiest on that piece of land she calls home, surrounded by cats, dogs, chickens and family. She is about to add to that family and pass on those country roots to a very lucky little boy. We enjoyed an outdoor maternity portrait session making good use of the landscape and architecture around us. I have a thing for old barns.

Want to see the cute little guy that popped out? Check out this post!

Lil’ Bear {Marietta, Ohio Baby Photography}

After five long months of waiting I finally got to meet this sweet little boy and photograph him. He has sparkly blue eyes, a dimple in his chin like his Mama and the sunniest disposition. He was happy to be the center of attention and full of smiles when his mama tickled him.  Five months is a fun age, they are generally pretty smiley, not very mobile, but can be propped and hold their heads ups while on their tummies. I love that Mama came prepared to be photographed as well, most babies this age are still very attached to Mama and being held is their most natural state!  Thanks for stopping by Lil’ Bear! You can check out Mama’s maternity session here!
