Welcome Bodhi Fox – Parkersburg, WV, Newborn Portrait Session

For some dang reason it has taken me forever to post this  session – this little guy is coming up on a year old now – let’s take a little walk down memory land.

Many people that know me through my other brand, Hot Tomato Pin-Up Academy,  don’t know I got my start as a baby photographer.  With this family portrait session, I took a little trip back to my roots, newborns and family in their home.  Their home happens to be an amazing converted school bus.

There are two adults, four kiddos and a couple of pets living in this hand crafted space. I have been fascinated by their journey and am an avid follower of Kristen’s instagram account. She is quite the photographer, catching some of the most authentic shots of her babies with her phone and sharing them with her friends. When she started the process of remodeling the bus I messaged her and told her I wanted to photograph her in that space. And when I learned that baby Bodhi had been born on the bus, I knew I wanted to come photograph them as their hearts grew to accommodate this new little being.

What I loved most about moving through the interior of this tiny home was realizing how they, as a family, really had to consider what was most important to them. There is no room for excess or frivolous indulgences with six humans living full time on a school bus. Pairing things down appears to create focus – I haven’t had a specific conversation with Kristen about the why’s, but if you talk to her long enough, it will come up in conversation. They simply wanted more time together to experience things as a family. In shifting life over to bus living,  they prioritized playtime, cozy, comfy sleeping areas and the ability to move around the country and explore and learn unencumbered by a mortgage.

Please take a moment to view the short video I made of their images. I have left a few of my favorite portraits below the video as well.

Happy Fathers Day

I met Scott just before he was to marry his lovely bride Samantha. They had been high school sweethearts and now Scott was in the military and Sam was finishing up college. And though I didn’t know him at all, it was obvious that he was head over heels for Sam.

I had contact with Scott several more times over the years when he would be in on leave. He has always been a little reserved, a little quiet around me. To his credit he has been, only slightly irritated, when I ask him to sit on the wet ground in his clean jeans, take off his shirt for bare chested maternity portraits, or hold that pose just one moment longer as I capture his wife’s growing belly. I know Scott doesn’t always love having his portrait taken, but I know that he loves Sam and he always shows up, always plays along and even makes really great suggestions for photos.

Scott is finally out of the military and is not just a husband to Sam, but is now Daddy to Abby and Eric. During Eric’s newborn portrait session this week I captured a side of Scott that I had yet to meet – him being an amazing Dad. I could not help but smile as I looked through the viewfinder of my trusty Nikon to see the most genuine smile break across his face as he held his son. I watched him, over and over again, use love, snuggles and rough housing to distract Miss Abby when she needed redirection. And when she needed a break from the photo shoot and he took her out to splash in a puddle I heard, what I can only call pride, in his voice when he called out to Sam, “Your daughter just sh*t on the deck.” He laughed, made sure we got to see it, then cleaned her and the mess up.

Here are a few things I know about this man, he loves to fish, he isn’t afraid of hard work and he is an amazing father. Not the kind that comes home at the end of the day and tosses the kids around for a few minutes while Sam makes dinner, but the kind of Dad that is tired at the end of the day because he has been doing all his normal daily stuff with a little blonde haired, blue eyed, 18 month old country girl by his side much of the time. He is a man that has spent way too much time away from his family serving his country and now, doesn’t take a minute of it for granted. This man is a good Dad.

This post is written to honor all the Dads that show up, take part, agree to be photographed over and over and over again because somewhere, in their heart they know how important it is for their families. But mostly, this blog is dedicated to Scott and the Daddy that he has become in just 18 short months. I cannot wait to see the Dad you will become over the next 18 years.

Farm Newborn {Violet}

Lovely little Violet. Maybe you remember the maternity session where Violet’s family was patiently awaiting her arrival. Violet was welcomed in a wonderful home birth. One moment they were a family of three, the next moment they were four.  What a lucky little girl to be born into such an amazing family. Her big sister Raven seems smitten with her. Her dad spent much of the session encouraging me to embark on my own journey to parenthood. (Yeah, I totally love him.) Mama just looked kind of blissed out and totally in love with little Violet. (She was probably delirious from lack of sleep!)

I love this family, this farm, this Violet.

Hi Five {Kegan}

My love affair with the Nutters began with this fella, Kegan. I met them when his mama was pregnant for him. I have been photographing he and his family for five years now. These people are my family.  They are the kind of people that will show up to help you move something heavy or drop everything to help a Hot Tomato in distress. They are the kind of people I want in my life. I look forward to Kegan’s birthday every year because it gives me a moment to pause and celebrate that the Nutters are in my life and part of my tribe. Happy Birthday Kegan and happy anniversary Jonny, Ashlie, Ayden, Garrett and Kegan. I love you more than ya’ll might ever know.

The love affair continued when he was born. I started to get to know this amazing family as I photographed tiny Kegan and watched as he was cuddled, loved, nursed and cared for by his family. Before long, his mama began working as my assistant and the process of the Nutters becoming part of my family began.

This brings us to his fifth birthday. Every year near Kegan’s birthday, we do his annual birthday portraits. We decided to hang out at Quincy park this year.

Kegan brought his scooter so he could do tricks.

Kegan had a ninja turtles party for his birthday, Mommy brought masks for he and Daddy.

Then he and Mommy finished off the day with ice cream cones at City Park. I would say it was a good day.
